Hemel ERSA Race 2008The first of the ERSA summer league races for 2008, the Hemel at Welwyn race, was held on Sunday 20th April, and for once at Welwyn it wasn’t raining! Some 27 Vikings made the trip, together with their supporters and drivers, including first time racer Darryl Cuthbert who managed to finish all 3 of his runs. It was a good day for the ladies, with 5 of them picking up medals, and 6 of them finishing in the top 25. A really big well done to Jasmin Taylor, who finished second overall in the ladies competition, and was only 0.01sec behind the fastest time of the day from a lady. The seniors/ masters team finished runners-up in the dual slalom competition, so well done to all the “auld ones”! Thank you to everyone who helped out on the day, next race on 15 June at Welwyn (the Welwyn race this time!) Results 1st place Sarah Mann (Seniors) Bev Anderson (Masters 1) Wendy Mann (Masters 3) 2nd place Jasmin
3rd place Claire Alvey (Junior 2) Michaela Royal (Masters 1) |

ERSA Championship 2007 The Champs this year were held at Welwyn and it didn’t
rain for once! Vikings had 20 racers entered, but only 18 raced on the day
itself. Both courses were very challenging and saw a number of the top skiers
go out, so well done to everyone who finished. And congratulations to Natalia
Toogood, Phillippa and Samantha Baxter, and Andy Wailes on competing in their
first championships. The results for the Vikings were very pleasing,
especially in the ladies event with 3 Vikings in the top ten, and 5 in the
top 15 (Bev was 3rd, Jasmin 4th and Sarah 5th).
Well done to Bev Anderson, Claire Alvey and Sarah Mann on winning their age
groups. When it came to the dual slalom events it was very
exciting, with the children’s team putting In the super 7 event it
was a very close call with Ollie Wood taking a big fall in the semi-final that
unfortunately put the Vikings out of the race. But despite his big fall and
damaging his thumb (again!!) Ollie went on to race in the run-off for 3rd/4th
place and helped the Vikings to 3rd place. It was a very successful day, and I hope everyone enjoyed
themselves. I’m sorry I was so busy being an official, so thanks to Paul
Bowling for all his help in sorting the racers out, and thanks to all the
parents and supporters who have come to watch and help out over the season. See you all next year!! Results 1st

Wycombe Phoenix Club National. After the Success of the Suffolk CN the Day before only three Vikings turned up for the Wycombe CN which was held at Welwyn due to the Fire at Wycombe and One of the Vikings was Chris who couldn’t race due to Injury, though The organizers would not withdraw him from the race when asked by SnowSport England, which seemed very strange as the race was over subscribed and another racer could have taken his place. Ollie was doing well, but had a nightmare of a last run and Bev won the Female Masters category. |

Karon
Taylor and I believe one or two helpers have been very busy over
the past month, making some lovely Vikings Flags, to have out on the slope on
Race days and Training days if we want too, similar to the ones Bloc let
us borrow last year but in much brighter
colours.
Anyone there on Saturday morning will have seen them having their first
airing!
So
please look out for them, you won't miss them if they are out! Thanks
Karon

On another scorching hot day only three Vikings Competed in the Grand Prix, Jas, Bev and Craig (Though we did also provide three officials again). The first Course was set by Tom Ondruz and after that only the girls where still in the race, the second course was set by Sally Bartlett and again both ladies finished and Bev came 2nd in the Masters Ladies

The Vikings traveled to

Wet would be a good way to describe the day. Very wet would be another. In fact at times water skiing seemed a far more appropriate pastime. But despite the weather it was a good day’s skiing, and watching the fastest racers coming down a tricky course at speed was certainly interesting! We had 27 racers (Chris couldn’t ski after his spectacular fall on Saturday) and their supporters who made the trip, and 5 Vikings came home with medals from the individual event while another 5 picked up medals in the rainbow event. Our seniors were runners up in the team event. Congratulations to Bev Anderson and Wendy Mann on their gold medals, and to Sarah Mann (silver) Claire Alvey (bronze) and Oliver Wood (bronze) on theirs. Steve Alvey, Jasmin Taylor and Rory Yeung all finished 4th in their age categories.
In the overall event there were top 10 finishes for Jasmin Taylor (8th), Claire Alvey (9th) and Bev Anderson (10th). We had 3 first time racers, Tom Goddard, Freddie Bloomfield and Alex Harris, who all managed to record 2 times and get a finish place, so well done! In the rainbow we had some very enthusiastic skiers who, despite the rain, were determined for the event to go ahead. Three of our racers from the team event decided to join in to make up the numbers (I suppose by that point they were so wet it didn’t make any difference how much it was raining!), with the result that the final between the Green Caterpillars and the Purple snails saw 5 Vikings involved, and it came down to the final 2 racers, a head to head between Claire and Rory. It was very close the whole way but Claire just managed to pip Rory on the line for a win for the Green Caterpillars! Samantha Baxter also picked up a gold medal with the caterpillars, whilst Chris Grainger and Freddie Bloomfield received silver medals along with Rory for the Snails. We hope you’ve all managed to dry out, all the skiers seemed to have a good day, I hope all the parents did too! And it was lovely to see Adele, Ian and little Gracie there supporting everyone, even if they did sensibly retreat to the dry and warmth of the bar at one point!
Wendy Mann (Masters 3)
Oliver Wood (Children 2)

5 Vikings raced in the first Grand prix of the season, Jasmin, Jessie, Bev, Craig and Chris. The first course, set by Sally Bartlett, was too challenging for Craig and so only 4 remained for the second run. Phil Brown insists that this evil concoction was set by Lee Bennett, but although all four of us finished it we all blame Phil…. Bev came 2nd in the Masters age group.

4 Vikings arrived to race, Bev, Rory, Craig and Chris on a course set By Rod Fergusson that looked like a more challenging version of the course Chris set for the Summer league race a fortnight before, but only Craig managed to take advantage of this coming 3rd in the Junior 1 age group and 15th Overall.

Only Jasmin and Craig raced at the Bromley CN both came third in their respective age groups.

The first ERSA Summer
League race of the summer saw 25 Vikings plus their supporters heading
towards Hemel. It proved to be a successful trip for quite a few racers, with
9 skiers picking medals in the main slalom event, and 3 more racers
(including some first time racers at ERSA!) winning medals in the rainbow
event. A special well done to Natasha Royal, who came third in the boys &
girls 1 age group at her first ever race, and to Oliver Wood and Claire Alvey
who both skied really well and picked up their first ever medals. Congrats
also to Bev Anderson and Wendy Mann on their first places. Natalia Toogood
and Daniel Powell won gold medals with the purple snails in the rainbow
event, and Chris Grainger won a silver medal with the blue baboons.
In the overall
competitions there were top ten finishes for Jessie Bowling (4th),
Claire Alvey (6th), Bev Anderson (9th), and Sarah Mann
(10th) in the women’s event, and for Craig Wright (5th)
in the men’s.
We had a lot of first time
racers at this event, and everyone skied really well. We hope you all enjoyed
the day, a big thank you to all the parents and supporters who came along as
well. You can find the full results on the notice board or on the ERSA
website.

In the
British Championship Bev Anderson came 3rd in The Slalom, The GS
and the Combined as well as winning the under 40’s age group in both races.
Chris Anderson came (much to his surprise) 1st in the 40 to 49 age
group in the Slalom
The
Vikings sent a team consisting of Issy Yeung, Liz Palfrey and Carly Phillips
to the British Schoolgirls Races at Flaine. In the first race Liz came third
overall and the team came 4th.
The
Vikings had one representative at the City Ski Championships, Sarah Mann, who
came 2nd in the Female category. If you have broadband, you can

the weekend was all about!!”
